A week designed for flutists
Flutes on Locust Walk is an independently run camp held at St. Mary's Church on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Flutists will have plenty of time to practice, while exploring new techniques, repertoire, and ideas. High school, College, and Adult flutists will perform daily at different places on Penn's campus, and will learn from guest artists and workshops throughout the week.
Movement and Music will start the day with free-flow musical interpretation. Inspired by the Dalcroze Eurythmics method, Movement and Music helps to develop an internal pulse while encouraging body awareness through musical phrasing.
Flute Technique will guide flutists through unique exercises created to help students with technical issues. The class will be created based on the aspects of playing that the students wish to improve.
During their Practice Hour, students can work on whatever they wish! Students will have the option to work in pairs in order to assist each other with practice problems and help to keep each other accountable. Students will be encouraged to keep a practice and listening journal throughout the week.
Students can bring their own lunches (refrigeration is available in the church kitchen), or order via GrubHub from a nearby restaurant to be delivered to the church. Students will be able to eat in an air conditioned space, or outside on Penn's campus (near the LOVE statue would be a good option!).
After lunch, students will visit the camp's Music Library, where music and flute-centric books will be available for perusal. Students will also be able to research repertoire they want to play, listen to anything they're interested in hearing, and print chamber music from IMSLP to play.
Students will play in small Chamber Music groups. Repertoire can be decided ahead of time by request, or researched and practiced during the week! And of course, no flute boot camp would be complete without a Flute Choir piece or two.
GUEST ARTISTS: Powell Flutes is proud to sponsor Andrea "Fluterscooter" Fisher to co-lead Tuesday and present on Entrepreneurship, and Lois Bliss Herbine on Wednesday to present a piccolo-focused workshop and day. Powell Flutes and Windworks will give a class on flute maintenance and will have flutes available to try on Thursday! Julia Viviano from Powell Flutes will be available from Tuesday-Thursday to host individual flute trials. More info on the Guests Artists is below.
Each day will culminate with a Performance. Students are not required to perform every day, but they are certainly welcome to! Flutists will have the opportunity to play in and around Penn's campus, and the week will end with a formal concert in St. Mary's beautiful sanctuary. Performances will be created with site-specific audiences in mind, and all will be open to the public.
Flutes on Locust Walk is will allow flutists to experience a week of high-level instruction in a relaxed atmosphere. The daily activities coalesce to improve musicianship as a whole while centering on the flute... and enjoying the summer!

Lois Bliss HerbineLois Bliss Herbine is an internationally renowned solo piccolo recording artist. All six accompanied recordings from her CD, Take Wing, which include Vincent Persichetti, Daniel Dorff and Michael Daugherty premieres, have been broadcast on radio stations across the United States. The Gramophone hails her recital as “high-flying” and Music Web International proclaims, “Another leading wind soloist takes flight”. In 2009, in her premiere chamber recording produced with DTR Music, Illuminations, her piccolo performance was praised as a “model of color-driven expression” that compared favorably to internationally renowned chamber artists (David Patrick Stearns, The Philadelphia Inquirer).
While Lois Herbine has maintained an active teaching studio at her home in suburban Philadelphia for thirty-five years, it has been in recent years that professional flutists and piccoloists have sought her out for private lessons and coaching. Nancy Nourse of Flute Focus magazine praised Herbine as a “piccolo pedagogue extraordinaire” for her role as resident instructor for the International Piccolo Symposium in 2009. Herbine unwaveringly continues the pedagogy of her teacher John Krell and his book Kincaidiana, which describes the legacy and pedagogy of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s principal winds from the “Golden Age”, flutist William Kincaid and oboist Marcel Tabuteau. Lois is a Guest Artist for this summer's Flutes on Locust Walk! |
Andrea "Fluterscooter" FisherAndrea Fisher aka Fluterscooter is a flutist, producer, and entrepreneur.
A graduate of The Juilliard School and a Powell Flutes artist, Fluterscooter has given lectures on Musical Entrepreneurship at NYU, Penn State, Juilliard, University of Iowa, and various flute festivals and masterclasses. Her unique performances incorporate everything from playing flute and organ simultaneously, 3D light projections, and she was the first flutist to perform with hologram technology in Japan. She has performed and recorded with the likes of John Legend, Ian Anderson, 50 Cent, Puff Daddy, and various pop artists. She also composes and produces, most recently producing her entire meditation album. The subject of Entrepreneurship is a hot topic in the arts, and Andrea “Fluterscooter” Fisher has been a sought after speaker at universities and conservatories including The Juilliard School, New York University, Penn State University, and University of Iowa, to name a few. She was active in the inception of The Juilliard School’s recent Entrepreneurship program as one of the first Resident Entrepreneurs. Andrea has been giving lectures, workshops, and private coachings to students and graduates of all arts disciplines for the past 4 years. Andrea is a Guest Artist for this summer's Flutes on Locust Walk! |
